Doncaster Racecourse is a prestigious world class horse racing venue, the Racecourse is very proud of the position it holds within the history and heritage of the industry which provides Town Moor and in particular the St. Leger race meeting with a national and international profile.
Here are some interesting facts about some of the most famous fixtures hosted at Doncaster:
1. Did you know that the St. Leger Race was named after Lieutenant Colonel Anthony St. Leger.
2. The original St. Leger Race was run on Cantley Common in 1776 and wasn't moved to Town Moor (Doncaster Racecourse) until 1779.
3. The St. Leger is the worlds oldest and longest classic race and is run over a total distance of 1 mile, 6 furlongs (1 furlong = 200 metres) and 132 yards.
4. Did you know that the Lincoln Handicap was first run in 1858 at Lincoln Racecourse. The race was not moved to Doncaster until 1965 in order that it may run over the straight mile.
5. Did you know that Doncaster officially opens the British Flat Racing Season with the Lincoln Meeting held each March and ends the season with the November Handicap.
