Race Report - 14th May 2011

6.00 Construction Index Apprentice Handicap (1m4f)

It was music night at Doncaster, featuring chart toppers The Wanted live on stage. Out on the track TENHOO was 8lb higher than when scoring at Newcastle last time but that steep rise in the handicap didn't prevent him from easing clear of these rivals for 5lb claimer Nathan Allison. Eric Alston's five-year-old, who won by five lengths despite being hemmed in at the two-pole, may now turn out at Haydock next week when he will escape a penalty. Top weight Dar Es Salaam was well backed and travelled prominently throughout to make the frame.

6.35 Multifab Metals Engineering & Fabrication Handicap (1m Rnd)

Michael Dods and Freddy Tylicki initiated a double on the night when the lightly raced SHAMDARLEY stepped up in trip to take this competitive handicap. He had been gelded since his previous run here and despite looking green when he hit the front, had too much for Mutajare back in second. Ventura Sands and Honest Deal were both prominent in the betting but neither could land a serious blow.

7.05 Beaver84 Hire & Sales Maiden Auction Stakes (5f)

AMADEUS DENTON completed the double for Dods and Tylicki but not before winning a protracted battle. The odds-on favourite looked to be travelling all over his opposition at the distance but didn't find as much as expected for pressure and had to dig deep to repel debutant Kohala and Artists Corner in a three-way photo. Barry McHugh, who rode the latter, had a torrid time, having been unseated on the way to the start and again after crossing the finishing line.

7.40 Gilks Fencing Median Auction Maiden Stakes (6f)

Favourite Dark Isle and market rival Bertiewhittle were always in the firing line but couldn't sustain their challenge as outsiders MAIN BEACH and Daisyclipper swept past down the centre of the track. The winner, who had finished fifth on debut on the All-Weather, was ponied to the start by his young trainer Toby Coles and the attention to detail paid off. Coles, who is based in Newmarket, believes his well built gelding is capable of taking a step up in grade in his raking stride.

8.10 CMEC Handicap (6f)

Alan McCabe's SILVER WIND has been rejuvenated by returning to turf, having won at Warwick recently, and duly followed up in this very competitive handicap. Robert Winston's only ride of the night proved too strong for David Nicholls' useful Jarrow, who again hinted that his turn should not be far away. Collect Art, the favourite, was running without a penalty after scoring in an apprentice race at Newmarket on Thursday and shaped well in third from a possible disadvantageous low draw.

8.40 PTL Occupational Hygiene Asbestos Management Handicap (7f)

Maverik, attempting to give Michael Dods and Freddy Tylicki a treble on the night, was always in the firing line but had no answer to The MELLOR FELLA'S late burst. It was a winning re-appearance for the in- form Richard Fahey and Paul Hanagan, who were preparing to head to Paris in a bid to win their first ever Classic with Doncaster winner Wootton Bassett in the French 2,000 Guineas the following day. Bosambo, a course winner here last month, was a big disappointment.
