Race Report - 3rd May 2008
5.40 Betfair Apprentice Training Series Handicap (1m21/2f)
Moulin Rouge Night got off to an exciting start when Jack Dean booted home POLISH POWER, a reliable stayer who had done most of his winning on Polytrack. This son of Halling drew roars from the crowd as he pulled away from the better fancied Jeer and Tifernati in the closing stages. The latter, from the in-form William Haggas yard, looked to be travelling the best of all but found little for pressure. He should come on for the run and may appreciate a step up in trip.
6.15 Office Depot Maiden Stakes (5f)
Kevin Ryan's juvenile Majuba was expected to show his rivals a clean pair of hooves with Royal Ascot a possible target. However, connections must have been disappointed to see him reeled in my debutant DAISY MOSES from the David Nicholls yard. The runner-up had excuses, as he was out on his own for a long way, and may be better served by a speed track. Daisy Moses, a filly by Mull Of Kintyre, ran on well to the line to wear down the favourite and looks a fair prospect.
6.45 crownhotel-bawtry.com Median Auction Maiden Stakes (6f)
Michael Dods has been in a rich vein of form at Doncaster and saddled yet another winner at the Town Moor track when CELTIC LYNN stayed on in game fashion to take this. She had shown promise on debut and benefited from a positive ride by Phillip Makin to fend off Marchingontogether. Phil Taylor, whose colours were carried to victory by the winner, was also successful at Doncaster with Honorable Love at the previous meeting.
7.20 Come Racing Here 17th May Handicap (6f)
GEOJIMALI usually comes to hand early, and was produced well off the pace to win this by a confident Saleem Golam. Jim Goldie's Scottish raider had run well on his re-appearance over the Borders and repelled Joseph Henry to scoop the prize. In third, Swinbrook ran well and looks to have found more consistency for new trainer Richard Fahey.
7.50 Doncaster racecourse Conference Centre Conditions Stakes (1m)
Frankie Dettori, disappointed with Racing Post Trophy hero Ibn Khaldun's poor show in the 2,000 Guineas earlier in the day, arrived by helicopter to partner Godolphin's well regarded Iguazu Falls. However, his day didn't exactly take a turn for the better as the colt finished last of the three runners behind Gaspar Van Wittel and the winner REDOLENT. Richard Hannon's charge had been beaten in Listed races but dominated this and may still be on course for a crack at the Irish 2,000 Guineas.
8.20 Rectangle Group Handicap (1m61/2f)
RED WINE had won three of his previous four starts at the track and returned to form to nail Michael Jarvis's gelded Bukit Tinggi in the dying strides under a beautifully judged ride by Stacey Renwick. Alan McCabe's veteran has been a great success story this year, having fractured his pelvis twice over the years. He will surely win again with conditions in his favour, while Puy d'Arnac again disappointed and may just need easier ground on which to let himself down.
